Appetite Suppressant Pills: How They Are Said to Work, Side Effects and Evidence

Quick answer

Appetite suppressant pills are products sold to make you feel less hungry. For the over-the-counter kind, the evidence is thin: the NIH says garcinia, sold for fullness, has little to no effect on weight. Many rely on stimulants such as caffeine, which bring heart and sleep side effects. SodaSlim lists 138 mg of caffeine per capsule.

The basics01

What are appetite suppressant pills?

Appetite suppressant pills are supplements or medicines sold to reduce hunger or cravings. The word covers two very different groups.

One group is prescription weight-loss medicine, which a provider can offer when eating and activity changes alone are not enough (NIDDK, Treatment for overweight and obesity). The other is over-the-counter supplements, which the FDA does not approve before sale (FDA, Questions and answers on dietary supplements). This guide is about the second group.

The NCCIH says many appetite suppressants are untested for safety and that labels may not match contents (NCCIH, Weight Control and Dietary Supplements). Supplement makers may use support phrases about hunger, so long as the label carries the FDA statement that the claim has not been evaluated (FDA, Structure/function claim notification).

How they are said to work02

What side effects can happen because of how appetite suppressants work?

Many over-the-counter appetite pills lean on stimulants, so the side effects follow the stimulant: a faster heart, higher blood pressure, jitters and poor sleep.

The reasoning is simple. A stimulant makes the body more alert and can make food feel less urgent for a while. The same push reaches the heart and nerves. The FDA lists too much caffeine as a cause of fast heart rate, palpitations, high blood pressure, insomnia, anxiety, jitters, an upset stomach, nausea and headache (FDA, Spilling the beans: how much caffeine is too much). We found no source that proves a stimulant lowers hunger for good, and the NIH says tolerance to caffeine builds (NIH ODS, Weight loss supplements (consumers)).

Other ingredients carry their own flags. Garcinia has liver toxicity reports and a possible interaction with drugs that affect serotonin (NCCIH, Garcinia cambogia). The NIH also lists three cases of mania tied to garcinia products (NIH ODS, Dietary Supplements for Weight Loss (health professionals)). The ingredient sold for fullness showed no change in appetite or satiety in a trial the NIH describes (NIH ODS, Dietary Supplements for Weight Loss (health professionals)).

Heart, sleep, stomach

Caffeine raises blood pressure and heart rate. People with an arrhythmia or high blood pressure should check with a provider first (MedlinePlus, Caffeine).

The evidence03

Do appetite suppressant pills work?

No good evidence shows that over-the-counter appetite suppressant pills work. The NIH says there is little scientific evidence that weight-loss supplements work (NIH ODS, Weight loss supplements (consumers)).

For garcinia, the NIH consumer sheet says little to no effect (NIH ODS, Weight loss supplements (consumers)), and a pooled review found 0.88 kg more loss than placebo, a small gap of uncertain meaning (Onakpoya 2011, Garcinia (HCA) meta-analysis). For raspberry ketone, the effect on weight is unknown and reliable human research is lacking (Rao 2021, Raspberry ketone review). A review of 315 trials found most showed no weight loss (UNC / Obesity 2021, Review of weight-loss supplements).

Doubt any promise of loss no matter what you eat (FTC, Seven red flags for bogus weight-loss claims).

The SodaSlim label04

Is SodaSlim an appetite suppressant?

SodaSlim is a dietary supplement in capsules, not a drink, and it is not a medicine. Its label says "Supports Craving Control & Satiety*", a structure and function phrase, not a proven result.

The asterisk leads to the FDA statement: not evaluated, and not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease. No study tested these five ingredients together, and the FTC says research on single ingredients does not carry over to a finished product (FTC, Health Products Compliance Guidance).

The label prints 138 mg of caffeine, 34.5% of the FDA's 400 mg guide (FDA, Spilling the beans: how much caffeine is too much), plus 130 mg garcinia extract with about 65 mg HCA. We found no verified daily study dose for garcinia, so no bar is drawn for it below.

Brown bars: the daily amount on the SodaSlim label (one capsule a day). Lime bars: a reference amount that a source reports, set to full width: a limit or the level where a safety signal appeared. A reference amount says what was tested or flagged, not what works for you, and no study tested SodaSlim.

Who should skip appetite suppressant pills or ask first?

Ask a doctor or pharmacist first if you take a regular medicine, or have a heart, liver, thyroid or anxiety condition. Skip them if you are pregnant, nursing or under 18.

The SodaSlim label gives the same caution. The questions below are a checklist, not medical advice.

1. Are you under 18, pregnant, trying to conceive or nursing?
2. Do you have a heart rhythm problem, high blood pressure, chest pain or fainting spells?
3. Do you have liver disease, or have you had liver trouble from a supplement or medicine?
4. Do you take a regular medicine (blood pressure, diabetes, thyroid, mood, ADHD, blood thinner, cholesterol, cancer or a stimulant)?
5. Do you have anxiety, panic attacks, seizures or trouble sleeping?
6. Do you already drink about three or more cups of coffee, or energy drinks, every day?
7. Are you hoping the capsule alone will do the work, without food, activity or a plan?

Keep taking prescribed medicine as directed. A supplement is not a substitute for one.

What has evidence06

What works better than an appetite suppressant?

Steady eating and activity habits, with a provider's help when needed, have the evidence. Mayo Clinic and the CDC describe a gradual 1 to 2 pounds a week as the pace more likely to last (Mayo Clinic, Weight loss: 6 strategies for success) (CDC, Steps for losing weight).

If hunger or cravings are hard, say so to your doctor. More on the fat burner safety guide and the guides hub.

FAQ07

SodaSlim questions people ask

What are the side effects of appetite suppressants?

The common ones are a fast heartbeat, palpitations, high blood pressure, trouble sleeping, anxiety, nausea and headache, mostly from stimulants such as caffeine (FDA, Spilling the beans: how much caffeine is too much). Garcinia adds reports of liver toxicity (NCCIH, Garcinia cambogia). Chest pain or fainting needs care now.

Do natural appetite suppressants really work?

The evidence is weak. The NIH says there is little scientific evidence that weight-loss supplements work, and "natural" does not mean safe (NIH ODS, Weight loss supplements (consumers)) (NCCIH, Weight Control and Dietary Supplements).

Is caffeine an appetite suppressant?

Caffeine is a stimulant. The NIH says it may help with a little weight loss, but tolerance builds (NIH ODS, Weight loss supplements (consumers)). A 94-study review found small changes in lab markers of fat metabolism, not in body weight (Meta-analysis, Does caffeine increase fat metabolism?).

Can appetite suppressants interact with medicines?

Yes. Garcinia may interact with drugs that affect the liver or serotonin (NCCIH, Garcinia cambogia), and caffeine can affect some medicines (Mayo Clinic, Caffeine: how much is too much). Ask a pharmacist before combining anything with a prescription.

How long can you take an appetite suppressant?

No source we found gives a safe length for over-the-counter pills. The NIH shows green coffee as seemingly safe at up to 200 mg a day for 12 weeks (NIH ODS, Weight loss supplements (consumers)). Ask your doctor about your case.

What are the signs an appetite suppressant is hurting you?

A racing heartbeat that will not settle, chest pain, fainting, a seizure, dark urine, yellow skin or eyes, or belly pain. Stop and get care (MSK, Green tea (About Herbs)). Call 911 for the first four.
