Green Tea Extract and Liver Injury: What 130 mg and 58.5 mg of EGCG in SodaSlim Mean
Green tea extract is a concentrated powder from green tea leaf, very different from a cup of tea. Each SodaSlim capsule lists 130 mg, standardized to 45% EGCG, or about 58.5 mg. Extracts have been linked to rare liver injury, and reviews show little or no weight effect.

The ingredient01
What is green tea extract, and what is EGCG?
Green tea extract is a concentrate of green tea leaf (Camellia sinensis), dried into a powder. EGCG is the best-known catechin in it. The SodaSlim label states 98% polyphenols, 75% catechins, 45% EGCG and under 3% caffeine.
The label arithmetic is easy. Of 130 mg, 45% is about 58.5 mg of EGCG, and under 3% caffeine is under 3.9 mg. The line is 19.8% of the 658 mg listed in a capsule.
A cup of green tea and a capsule of extract are not the same thing. The NIH's green tea page says drinking it is not linked to safety concerns in adults, while liver injury is uncommon but reported with extract pills (NCCIH, Green tea). Concentration is the difference.
| Name on the label | Green Tea Extract (Camellia sinensis)(leaf)(98% polyphenols, 75% catechins, 45% EGCG, <3% caffeine) |
|---|---|
| What it is | Concentrated extract of green tea leaf, standardized to 98% polyphenols, 75% catechins and 45% EGCG |
| Per 1-capsule serving | 130 mg |
| Also printed or worked out | about 58.5 mg EGCG; under 3.9 mg caffeine |
| % Daily Value | Not established (**) |
| Amount used in research | Liver enzymes rose at 800 mg a day of extract; EFSA flags 800 mg a day of EGCG from supplements |
| Strength of evidence | Small at best (Cochrane: -0.04 kg outside Japan) |
| Marketed or traditional use | Marketed for 'fat oxidation'; reviews found little or no weight effect. |
| Main caution | Extracts, unlike tea, have been linked to liver injury. Stop and get care for abdominal pain, dark urine or yellow skin or eyes. |
Liver safety02
Can green tea extract cause liver injury?
Yes, in rare cases. Liver injury is uncommon but has been reported mainly with green tea extract pills, not with brewed tea (NCCIH, Green tea). That is why it carries its own caution.
Several sources give numbers. A review of 34 trials found liver events in 4 of them, mostly mild enzyme rises and none serious, at 500 to 1,600 mg a day (Isomura 2016, Liver safety of green tea extracts (RCT review)). In a U.S. study of 1,414 drug-induced liver injury cases, 40 (3%) were attributed to green tea, and 3 patients needed a transplant (NIDDK repository, HLA-B*35:01 and green tea liver injury). A gene variant, HLA-B*35:01, was found in 72% of those cases against 11% of controls. The NIH says 5 to 15 percent of Americans carry it (NCCIH, Green tea).
EFSA, in a summary by the IFST, found that 800 mg a day of EGCG from supplements may be linked to early signs of liver damage, and it could not set a safe dose (IFST, EFSA green tea catechins safety assessment). Memorial Sloan Kettering reports liver enzymes rose at 800 mg a day of extract (MSK, Green tea (About Herbs)).
| Measure | SodaSlim capsule | Reference | Share |
|---|---|---|---|
| Green tea extract | 130 mg | 800 mg a day, enzymes rose (MSK, Green tea (About Herbs)) | 16.2% |
| EGCG (worked out) | about 58.5 mg | 800 mg a day, EFSA flag (IFST, EFSA green tea catechins safety assessment) | 7.3% |
These are reference points, not safe levels. EFSA could set no safe dose, and the shares do not allow for your genes, your medicines or the other four lines in the capsule.
What studies show03
Does green tea extract help with weight loss?
Only very slightly, if at all. A Cochrane review found outside Japan a difference of 0.04 kg, which was not significant. The authors judged the loss small and unlikely to matter (Cochrane, Green tea for weight loss (Jurgens)).
Studies in Japan ranged from 0.2 to 3.5 kg but differed too much to pool (Cochrane, Green tea for weight loss (Jurgens)). The NIH's professional sheet adds that catechins plus caffeine gave 1.38 kg more loss than caffeine alone, while catechins alone showed no effect (NIH ODS, Dietary Supplements for Weight Loss (health professionals)). NCCIH says green tea "may have a modest effect on body weight" and calls the evidence weak (NCCIH, Green tea).
The sales page says green tea "enhances internal fat oxidation" (SodaSlim sales page). The reviews found little or no weight effect, and no study tested SodaSlim. The better summary is an average difference near 1 kg or less, which is not a promise for any one person (Cochrane, Green tea for weight loss (Jurgens)).

See packsWarning signs04
Who should avoid an EGCG supplement, and what are the warning signs?
People with a liver problem should not use green tea extract, according to advice from the US Pharmacopeia quoted by Memorial Sloan Kettering (MSK, Green tea (About Herbs)). Ask a doctor first if you take any regular medicine.
The same source lists interactions with nadolol, verapamil, statins, tamoxifen and irinotecan (MSK, Green tea (About Herbs)). If you take any of them, ask a pharmacist before SodaSlim. Keep taking prescribed medicine, and never stop one on your own.
Belly pain, dark urine, or yellow skin or eyes can signal liver trouble (MSK, Green tea (About Herbs)). Stop the capsules and call a doctor. Chest pain, fainting or a racing heart need care now.

The other lines05
How does green tea extract fit with the rest of the SodaSlim label?
It is one of five lines, and it is the one with the clearest liver reports. The caffeine line is larger, and the other three have thinner research.
Because no study tested these five together, the FTC's rule applies: ingredient research does not automatically support a finished product (FTC, Health Products Compliance Guidance). The NIH sums up the field in one sentence: "there's little scientific evidence that weight-loss supplements work" (NIH ODS, Weight loss supplements (consumers)).
FAQ06
SodaSlim questions people ask
Does green tea extract cause liver damage?
Rarely, but it has happened. Liver injury is uncommon but reported mainly with extract pills, not brewed tea (NCCIH, Green tea). Stop and get care for belly pain, dark urine or yellow skin or eyes (MSK, Green tea (About Herbs)).
How much EGCG is in SodaSlim?
About 58.5 mg per capsule, worked out from 130 mg of extract at 45% EGCG on the label. That is 7.3% of the 800 mg a day of EGCG that EFSA flags for early liver signs (IFST, EFSA green tea catechins safety assessment).
Is green tea extract the same as drinking green tea?
No. The extract is concentrated, and the NIH says drinking green tea is not linked to safety concerns, while liver injury has been reported with extract pills (NCCIH, Green tea).
Does green tea extract help you lose weight?
Barely. A Cochrane review found a 0.04 kg difference outside Japan, which was not significant, and called any loss unlikely to matter (Cochrane, Green tea for weight loss (Jurgens)).
Does the green tea extract in SodaSlim contain caffeine?
Yes, a little. The label says under 3% caffeine, which is under 3.9 mg in 130 mg of extract. That adds slightly to the separate 138 mg caffeine line.
What is the HLA-B*35:01 gene and why does it matter?
It is a gene variant found in 72% of green tea liver cases against 11% of controls in a U.S. study (NIDDK repository, HLA-B*35:01 and green tea liver injury). The NIH says 5 to 15 percent of Americans carry it (NCCIH, Green tea).
Which medicines mix badly with green tea extract?
Memorial Sloan Kettering lists nadolol, verapamil, statins, tamoxifen and irinotecan (MSK, Green tea (About Herbs)). Ask your pharmacist about your own list, and keep taking prescribed medicine.
