Weight Loss Supplement Guides: Over-the-Counter Pills, Evidence and Safety
These weight loss supplement guides explain what over-the-counter pills can and cannot do. The NIH says there is little scientific evidence that they work, and a review of 315 trials found most showed no loss. Six guides cover evidence, safety, the liver and medicines. SodaSlim, a capsule with 138 mg of caffeine, is the worked example.

The six guides01
Which weight loss supplement guide should you read first?
Start with the question you have. Each guide answers one, in plain words, with sources you can open.
If you are not sure the pills do anything, read the evidence guide. If you worry about harm, read the safety guide and the liver guide. If a label promises a faster metabolism or less hunger, the claims guides take those apart. Every guide ends with how it applies to a SodaSlim capsule, which is a capsule, not a drink.

Over the counter02
What is an over-the-counter weight loss pill?
An over-the-counter weight loss pill is a product you buy without a prescription. In the US most are dietary supplements, and the FDA does not approve supplements before they are sold (FDA, Questions and answers on dietary supplements).
That means no agency checks that a supplement works before it reaches a shelf or a checkout page. The maker must hold support for its claims and add a notice that the FDA has not evaluated them (FDA, Structure/function claim notification). Prescription weight-loss medicine is a different path: a provider offers it when eating and activity changes alone are not enough (NIDDK, Treatment for overweight and obesity).
| Type | How you get it | Reviewed before sale? |
|---|---|---|
| Dietary supplement (capsule, powder, drink) | Store or online checkout | No (FDA, Questions and answers on dietary supplements) |
| Prescription weight-loss medicine | A provider | Yes, as a drug |
| Food and drink (coffee, tea) | Anywhere | As a food |
"Best pills"03
What are the best weight loss pills?
No source we found ranks a best weight loss pill. The NIH says there is little scientific evidence that these supplements work (NIH ODS, Weight loss supplements (consumers)).
Lists of "best pills" are usually ads or affiliate pages. The FTC says paid endorsements and affiliate commissions must be disclosed near the endorsement (FTC, Endorsement Guides: what people are asking). This site earns money from order links, and it says so on the about page.
A better question is which pill is safe for you to try, if any. The answer starts with your health and medicines, not a ranking. A product that prints every amount, as SodaSlim's label does, is easier to check than one that hides its formula. That is a fair strength, not proof of an effect.

How do the guides apply to SodaSlim?
SodaSlim is a dietary supplement in capsules, 30 to a bottle, one capsule a day. No study has tested it, so the guides read its label against what sources say about each ingredient.
The label prints 138 mg caffeine anhydrous and 130 mg each of green tea extract, green coffee bean extract, garcinia extract and raspberry ketone, 658 mg in all. Caffeine alone is 34.5% of the FDA's 400 mg a day guide for most healthy adults (FDA, Spilling the beans: how much caffeine is too much). The green tea extract is 16.2% of the 800 mg a day where liver enzymes rose (MSK, Green tea (About Herbs)).
Those bars are limits, not proven doses. For garcinia and raspberry ketone we found no verified daily study dose, so we draw none. See the full list on the ingredients page.
When it is urgent05
When should you stop a supplement and get medical care?
Stop and get care for chest pain, fainting, a racing heartbeat that will not settle, a seizure, dark urine, yellow skin or eyes, or severe belly pain.
Call 911 for the first four. For a suspected caffeine overdose, Poison Help is 1-800-222-1222 (Cleveland Clinic, Caffeine overdose). Tell your doctor about every supplement you take (NIH ODS, Dietary Supplements: What You Need to Know), and keep taking prescribed medicine as directed. A supplement is not a substitute for one.
- Chest pain, fainting, a racing heartbeat that will not settleCall 911. Caffeine overdose and seizures are emergencies; Poison Help is 1-800-222-1222.
- Yellow skin or eyes, dark urine, severe stomach painStop and see a doctor the same day. These are liver warning signs listed for green tea extract.
- A seizure or severe confusionCall 911. Seizures are reported with rapid intake of about 1,200 mg of caffeine.
- Weight loss promised no matter what you eatOne of the FTC's red flags: loss without diet or exercise, permanent loss, or blocking fat absorption.
- Jitters, poor sleep or anxiety that keep goingCut back caffeine from every source and talk to your doctor or pharmacist.
Signs from (Cleveland Clinic, Caffeine overdose) (MSK, Green tea (About Herbs)) (FTC, Seven red flags for bogus weight-loss claims). This list is not complete, and a supplement is never a reason to wait.
The guides are general information, not medical advice. Pages carry a place for a medical reviewer that is not filled in yet.
FAQ06
SodaSlim questions people ask
Are over-the-counter weight loss pills regulated?
Only loosely. The FDA does not approve supplements before sale, and it acts after a product is on the market (FDA, Questions and answers on dietary supplements). Makers must hold support for their claims and print the FDA statement on the label (FDA, Structure/function claim notification).
Does the FDA approve any weight loss supplement?
No. The FDA cannot approve dietary supplements before sale (FDA, Questions and answers on dietary supplements). A seal that says "FDA registered" is not approval. Prescription weight-loss medicines are a different group that a provider decides on.
Which weight loss supplement ingredients have the most evidence?
None has strong evidence. Reviews give green tea about 0.04 to 1 kg and garcinia about 0.88 kg versus placebo (Cochrane, Green tea for weight loss (Jurgens)) (Onakpoya 2011, Garcinia (HCA) meta-analysis). Green coffee rests on three poor-quality trials (Onakpoya 2011, Green coffee extract meta-analysis).
How do I know if a weight loss pill is a scam?
Check the FTC's red flags: loss with no diet or exercise, loss no matter what you eat, permanent loss after you stop, or blocking fat absorption (FTC, Seven red flags for bogus weight-loss claims). Also doubt stories with no controlled trial behind them.
Should I take a weight loss supplement with my medicines?
Ask your doctor or pharmacist first. Green tea extract has listed interactions with some medicines (MSK, Green tea (About Herbs)), and garcinia may interact with liver or serotonin drugs (NCCIH, Garcinia cambogia). Keep taking prescribed medicine.
What is a healthy pace for weight loss?
Mayo Clinic and the CDC describe 1 to 2 pounds (0.5 to 1 kg) a week over the long term (Mayo Clinic, Weight loss: 6 strategies for success) (CDC, Steps for losing weight). NIDDK suggests a first goal of 5% to 10% of starting weight in six months (NIDDK, Choosing a safe and successful weight-loss program).
