What Are Chlorogenic Acids in Coffee, and How Much Is in One Capsule?

Quick answer

Chlorogenic acids are plant compounds found in coffee beans, and the SodaSlim label standardizes its green coffee bean extract to 50% of them. One capsule holds 130 mg of extract, so about 65 mg is chlorogenic acids. The extract also carries caffeine the label does not count, so the stomach and heart cautions still apply.

What are chlorogenic acids in coffee?

Chlorogenic acids are a family of natural compounds that sit in coffee seeds. Green coffee means the seeds before roasting, and that is the form the SodaSlim label names.

SodaSlim is a capsule, not a drink. Its label reads "Green Coffee Bean Extract (Coffea robusta)(seed)(50% chlorogenic acids)". The words in brackets tell you which plant, which part and how strong the extract is.

How much chlorogenic acid is in one SodaSlim capsule?

One capsule holds about 65 mg of chlorogenic acids. The label prints 130 mg of extract, and 50% of 130 is 65.

The NIH says green coffee bean extract seems safe up to 200 mg a day for 12 weeks (NIH ODS, Weight loss supplements (consumers)). That figure is about the extract on its own, not this five-ingredient capsule.

Can chlorogenic acids or coffee extract upset your stomach?

They can for some people, but the sources do not pin the blame on chlorogenic acids. What they do list is headache and urinary tract infections for the extract, and an upset stomach for too much caffeine (NIH ODS, Weight loss supplements (consumers)) (FDA, Spilling the beans: how much caffeine is too much).

That matters because the extract carries caffeine of its own. The label counts 138 mg of caffeine anhydrous and says nothing about the extra caffeine in the green coffee line. Your real total is a little higher than the printed figure.

If you drink coffee, add the cup first. A 12 fl oz brewed coffee runs 113 to 247 mg of caffeine (FDA, Spilling the beans: how much caffeine is too much). With the capsule, that is 251 to 385 mg before the unprinted extra. Our caffeine content page shows the full tally.

FAQ01

SodaSlim questions people ask

What do chlorogenic acids do in the body?

The sources we read do not show a proven weight effect from chlorogenic acids in people. A review of three poor-quality trials of green coffee extract found a difference of 2.47 kg, and its authors called the trials weak (Onakpoya 2011, Green coffee extract meta-analysis). Treat it as unproven.

Is there chlorogenic acid in regular brewed coffee?

Coffee seeds contain chlorogenic acids, so brewed coffee does too. No source we read gives an amount per cup. For a daily caffeine count, use the FDA range of 113 to 247 mg per 12 fl oz (FDA, Spilling the beans: how much caffeine is too much).

Does SodaSlim list chlorogenic acid in milligrams?

The label lists the extract at 130 mg and says it is 50% chlorogenic acids. That works out to about 65 mg. The label does not print the 65 itself, so it is our arithmetic.
