Does Garcinia Cambogia Help With Weight Loss? The Numbers

How much weight does garcinia cambogia help you lose?
On average, about 0.9 kg more than placebo in one pooled review. That is 0.88 kg, or roughly 1.9 pounds, with a range from -1.75 kg to 0.00 kg (Onakpoya 2011, Garcinia (HCA) meta-analysis).
The authors say HCA can cause short-term weight loss but that the effect is small and its clinical relevance uncertain (Onakpoya 2011, Garcinia (HCA) meta-analysis).
The NIH's consumer page goes further and says garcinia cambogia has little to no effect (NIH ODS, Weight loss supplements (consumers)). The same NIH professional page adds that the result was not significant when only the two rigorous trials were counted (NIH ODS, Dietary Supplements for Weight Loss (health professionals)).
Why is a 0.9 kg difference called small?
It is small next to the pace doctors describe and next to ordinary day-to-day swings. Mayo Clinic describes 1 to 2 pounds a week as the pace more likely to last (Mayo Clinic, Weight loss: 6 strategies for success).
It came from nine pooled trials of HCA alone, not a five-ingredient capsule.

What do bigger reviews say about weight-loss supplements?
They say the evidence is thin. A review of 315 trials found most showed no weight loss, and the 16 positive low-risk trials ranged from 0.3 to 4.93 kg (UNC / Obesity 2021, Review of weight-loss supplements).
