What Are the Side Effects of Green Coffee Extract?

Quick answer

The NIH lists headache and urinary tract infections as side effects of green coffee bean extract, and the extract also carries caffeine. SodaSlim has 130 mg of it per capsule, which is 65% of the 200 mg a day the NIH calls seemingly safe for 12 weeks. That figure is for the extract alone.

What are the side effects of green coffee extract?

The side effects the NIH names are headache and urinary tract infections (NIH ODS, Weight loss supplements (consumers)). The same page says the extract contains caffeine, so the usual caffeine effects can follow.

Those effects are fast heart rate, palpitations, higher blood pressure, trouble sleeping, anxiety, jitters, an upset stomach and nausea when intake is too high (FDA, Spilling the beans: how much caffeine is too much).

Which effects come from the extract and which from the caffeine?

Headache and urinary infections are named for the extract. The rest come from caffeine, which the extract and the capsule both carry.

The capsule holds 138 mg of caffeine anhydrous, and the green coffee line adds a little more that the label does not print. See the side effects page for all five lines.

Why is the best-known green coffee trial left out?

It was retracted. The journal withdrew it in 2014 because the sponsors could not assure the validity of the data (Dove Press, Retraction of the Vinson 2012 green coffee trial).

We do not use it as evidence, and neither should a seller. What remains is a review of three small trials, all at high risk of bias, with a pooled difference of 2.47 kg that its authors called promising but poorly designed (Onakpoya 2011, Green coffee extract meta-analysis).

Does the sales page match the evidence on green coffee?

Not on the points we could check. The sales page uses benefit wording that the sources do not back as outcomes in people.

  1. Label frontSupports Craving Control & Satiety*No source shows these five together change hunger. Appetite and fullness were unaffected in the garcinia trial the NIH describes. (NIH ODS, Dietary Supplements for Weight Loss (health professionals)) (NCCIH, Garcinia cambogia)
  2. Label frontPromotes Energy Production From Fat*Caffeine nudged lab markers of fat metabolism in a 94-study review, not body weight. (Meta-analysis, Does caffeine increase fat metabolism?)
  3. Label frontHelps Support Healthy Weight Management*Reviews find average differences of about 1 kg or less, and the NIH says there is little scientific evidence that weight-loss supplements work. (NIH ODS, Weight loss supplements (consumers)) (UNC / Obesity 2021, Review of weight-loss supplements)
  4. Sales page, quoted"immediately awakens the metabolism"Not supported as an outcome in people by the sources found; caffeine is a stimulant. (Meta-analysis, Does caffeine increase fat metabolism?) (SodaSlim sales page)
  5. Sales page, quoted"accelerated reduction in body fat" (raspberry ketone)The sources found say the effect of raspberry ketone on weight is unknown. (NIH ODS, Weight loss supplements (consumers)) (Rao 2021, Raspberry ketone review) (SodaSlim sales page)
  6. Sales page, quoted"enhances internal fat oxidation" (green tea)Reviews found little or no weight effect from green tea extract. (Cochrane, Green tea for weight loss (Jurgens)) (SodaSlim sales page)

Label-front lines are printed on the bottle. Sales-page lines are the seller's own wording, shown in quotes and examined, not endorsed. Health claims need competent and reliable scientific evidence, generally human trials of the same product (FTC, Health Products Compliance Guidance).

Ask a doctor or pharmacist before use if you take any medicine or have a heart, liver or blood pressure condition. Keep taking prescribed medicine. Chest pain, fainting or a racing heart needs emergency care.

FAQ01

SodaSlim questions people ask

Does green coffee extract cause headaches?

Headache is one of the two side effects the NIH names for green coffee bean extract, and caffeine can cause it too (NIH ODS, Weight loss supplements (consumers)). Stopping caffeine suddenly can also bring a headache for a couple of days (MedlinePlus, Caffeine).

Can green coffee extract cause kidney or urinary problems?

The NIH lists urinary tract infections as a reported side effect of the extract (NIH ODS, Weight loss supplements (consumers)). It does not describe the cause. Call a doctor if you get pain or burning when you pass urine.

Is green coffee extract safe for everyone?

No. The label of SodaSlim says it is not for anyone under 18 or pregnant or nursing, and to consult a physician if you take a medicine or have a condition. Safety also depends on the dose and the caffeine in it.
