Proprietary Blend Supplements: What the Label May Not Tell You
A proprietary blend supplement lists several ingredients under one blend name with a single total, not an amount for each. What is a proprietary blend on a supplement label?
A proprietary blend is a group of ingredients listed together under one name, with one combined weight.
The rule is in 21 CFR 101.36. Blend ingredients must appear in descending order of predominance by weight. The amount beside the blend name is the total weight of everything in it (21 CFR 101.36, Proprietary blends (Cornell LII copy)).
So the order tells you which ingredient weighs more, not by how much.
What does a blend hide from the buyer?
A blend hides the dose of each ingredient. You cannot compare it with a studied amount or with a safety limit.
The order still gives two bounds. In a blend of k ingredients with total weight T, the first weighs at least T/k, and the n-th weighs at most T/n. These are floors and ceilings, never the actual amount.
