Green Coffee vs Green Tea Extract: Two Lines on One Label

Quick answer

Green coffee vs green tea extract is a comparison of two different plants. Green coffee is unroasted coffee seed; green tea is leaf. Each SodaSlim capsule (not a drink) holds 130 mg of each: about 65 mg chlorogenic acids and about 58.5 mg EGCG.

What is the difference between green coffee and green tea extract?

The difference is the plant. Green coffee extract comes from unroasted coffee seed, while green tea extract comes from the leaf of the tea plant.

Both sit on the label at 130 mg per capsule. The first is standardized to 50% chlorogenic acids. The second is standardized to 98% polyphenols, 75% catechins and 45% EGCG.

Which one has better evidence for weight loss?

Neither has strong evidence. Green tea has the larger body of trials; green coffee has a thin one.

A Cochrane review of green tea outside Japan found an average difference of -0.04 kg, which was not significant (Cochrane, Green tea for weight loss (Jurgens)).

For green coffee, a meta-analysis found -2.47 kg, but from three trials, all at high risk of bias (Onakpoya 2011, Green coffee extract meta-analysis). Treat it as weak.

No study has tested SodaSlim, so none of these numbers describes the capsule.

Do green coffee and green tea extract carry different cautions?

Yes. The main caution for green coffee is its hidden caffeine. The main caution for green tea extract is the liver.

Green tea extract pills, unlike brewed tea, have been linked to liver injury. EFSA says 800 mg a day of EGCG from supplements may be linked to early liver damage, and no safe dose could be set (IFST, EFSA green tea catechins safety assessment). This capsule's 58.5 mg is about 7.3% of that figure.

For green coffee, the NIH calls up to 200 mg a day for 12 weeks seemingly safe, and lists headache and urinary tract infections as side effects (NIH ODS, Weight loss supplements (consumers)). The label's 130 mg is 65% of that 200 mg. The coffee line's caffeine is not printed, so your total is 138 mg plus a little more.

Should I read the whole label before choosing a pack?

Yes. Read the Supplement Facts and the caution lines first; the ingredients page lays out all five lines.

Ask a doctor or pharmacist first if you take medicine or have a liver or heart condition, as the side effects page explains. Keep taking prescribed medicine. Dark urine or yellow skin or eyes means stop and get care. A 3 or 6 bottle pack covers 90 or 180 days; price and guarantee terms show at checkout.

FAQ01

SodaSlim questions people ask

Is green coffee extract the same as coffee?

No. It comes from unroasted seeds and is standardized to chlorogenic acids, here 50%. It still contains some caffeine, but the label does not print how much.

Does green tea extract have as much caffeine as a cup of tea?

No. The label's green tea line says under 3% caffeine, so under 3.9 mg in 130 mg of extract. A 12 fl oz cup of green tea has about 37 mg.

Which extract is riskier for the liver?

Green tea extract is the one with liver reports, mostly at high EGCG amounts. If you have liver trouble, ask a doctor before taking any of the five lines.
